Marvin C. Delaney Off The Pages Of The Houston Chronicle
Marvin C. Delaney has a passion for helping people. This man hocked his Ford 150 pickup truck in 1978 for $2,400.00, purchased four Radio Shack TRS80 Computers, began teaching basic computer programming to the community. This program later spread to Houston Independent School Districts' Alcott Elementary, Attucks Middle School, Jones Vanguard , and finally to the community at large based at South Park Baptist Church located at 5830 Van Fleet. Houston Community College recruited him as a Introduction to Computer Technology Teacher from 1982 to 2002 while working at Shell Oil Company. He taught at night at the Milby Houston Community College Campus under Irene Pocorello teaching the subject of Computer Operations on an IBM 4341 Mainframe Distributed Processing system. Marvin discovered that Milby had the same equipment as Shell Oil. The Milby Campus was designated a Petrochemical Technology Campus. Later Marvin opened a school for students not successfully mastering the TAKS test. Under Texas Law a student not mastering the TAKS test does not receive a high school diploma…even though all required course work for 12 years is complete. A little-known Texas Law . § 51.9241. ADMISSION OF STUDENT WITH NONTRADITIONAL SECONDARY EDUCATION. Allows a student to transfer credits from high school to private school then graduate from that private school.Marvin Delaney, Mrs. Jackson, Coach Elmer Lucas set up University Park Academy to get this group of students on to college with computer essentials as part of that curriculum.
